Windows 11 was released on 5th of October and brought several significant improvements. Maintaining it’s familiar feel, the new OS has a fluent design and more modern user interface that focuses on bringing back the balance to your desktop. Does my PC qualify for a free upgrade?

Free upgrade to Windows 11 will be offered to Windows 10 devices that meet the system requirements. To see whether your PC is capable of running Windows 11 you can check the system requirements or download and install PC Health Check app.

Windows 11: Is your device compatible?

Another way to see if your device is eligible for Windows 11 upgrade is by accessing Settings ➡ Update & Security ➡ Windows Update. You will see one of the two options:

1. A message stating that your computer "doesn't currently meet all the system requirements for Windows 11". In this case, you can directly download PC Health Check App to check further details.

2. A message (in the upper right corner) stating that "this PC can run Windows 11". This indicates that your device meets the minimum requirements and will be offered a free upgrade when the time comes.

New Features

Updated Microsoft store

Brand-new Microsoft Store look and feel including a broad range of entertainment apps and games including a direct bridge to the Xbox App. The search engine has been greatly improved and workflow integrations have been added to provide the best user experience for Windows 11 users being able to access Microsoft Store at all times from everywhere.

PC gaming performance on Windows 11

Windows 11 enhances the gaming performance and experience by including a variety of improvements on peripherals compatibility, HDR mode and DirectX 12 Ultimate for better graphics, and DirectStorage for a faster load.

Chat from Microsoft Teams on Windows 11

Windows 11 will provide personal users with direct access to Chats from Microsoft Teams. The app will allow users to start video calls and chats directly from the Taskbar.


One of the new features in Windows 11 is the enhanced new Widgets menu: An assortment of bite-sized info boxes accessible from the redesigned taskbar. The options, look and user experience have been significantly improved.

System requirements

‣ Required Processor: 1 Ghz or faster with 2 or more cores and appearing on list of approved CPUs by Microsoft. The processor in the device will be a main determining factor for running Windows 11.

‣ Recommended Memory: 4 GB RAM

‣ Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device

‣ Required Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel.

‣ System firmware: UEFI (for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, a modern version of the PC BIOS) and Secure Boot capable.

‣ TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.

‣ Graphics Card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.

‣ Internet Connection: Microsoft account and internet connectivity required for setup for Windows 11 Home.

‣ Windows Version: The PC must be running Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) in order to upgrade through Windows Update. Free updates can be installed through Windows Update in Settings ➞ Update and Security.

What is Windows 11?

Windows 11 is the newest version of the Windows operating system developed by Microsoft. It will be released before the end of 2021 and comes 6 years after the last major OS version (Windows 10).

Is Windows 11 a replacement for Windows 10?

Windows 11 is the most recent OS version, but Windows 10 will be fully supported at least until October 14, 2025.

What is the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Windows 11 has all the security and power as its predecessor Windows 10 at the same time bringing a visually updated interface. When will I be able to get Windows 11?

While the official release was on 5th of October, Windows 11 beta version was already made available for members of Windows Insider program in June 2021. According to Microsoft, PCs with pre-installed Windows 11 will become available for purchase from a broad selection of retailers later this year, while Windows-10-to-Windows-11 upgrade will be started at the end of 2021.

How can I get Windows 11?

If you want to get early access, you have to become a Windows Insider and download the beta version. Otherwise, if your PC meets the minimum hardware requirements it will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 for free. Soon you will also be able to buy PCs with the new OS pre-installed.

When will I be able to upgrade my Windows 10 device to Windows 11?

The exact upgrade rollout plan is still in process, but it should reach the first devices late this year and majority of the users early 2022. Most of the PCs that are newer than four years old will be able to get Windows 11, but not all devices that meet the requirements will be offered to upgrade at the same time.

How can I see if my PC meets the requirements for Windows 11 upgrade?

In order to be eligible for the free upgrade, your PC has to be running the most current version of Windows 10 and meet the minimum system specifications. To see whether your PC is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, download and run the PC Health Check app. When the upgrade rollout process has started, you can determine whether it is already available for your device by going to Settings ➞ Windows Updates.

How will I know when the upgrade is available for my Windows 10 PC?

An indication from Windows Update will prompt you when your PC is eligible. You can check the status yourself, by going to Settings ➞ Windows Update. The roll out will begin end of 2021 and continue into 2022, specific timing of the upgrade will vary per device.

Will the Windows 11 upgrade be free and how long will the offer last?

For eligible systems Windows 11 upgrade is free and the offer does not have a specific end date, but Microsoft reserves the right at any point to end the free offer. However, this end date will not be sooner than one year from general availability. Members of the Windows Insider Program can install the new OS ahead of schedule but might not be able to enjoy all the features properly until the end of rollout.

What edition of Windows 11 will I get when I upgrade?

The free upgrade is for the same edition as you have on your Windows 10 device. For example, if you have Windows 10 Home, you will be upgraded to Windows 11 Home edition.

If I upgrade to Windows 11, what happens to my files?

Although all your files and data will transfer by default, it is highly recommended to back up all your files before installation.

Will my accessories work with Windows 11?

If they worked with Windows 10 and meet the minimum requirements, accessories should work with Windows 11 without any issues. To be absolutely sure, check with the manufacturer of the accessory.

Is it possible to go back to Windows 10 after upgrading to Windows 11?

Yes, after installing the Windows 11 upgrade you get a 10-day period where you can move back to Windows 10 at the same time keeping files and data that you brought along. If you want to go back after the 10-day period you will need to back up your files and clean install Windows 10.

Will I be able to install Windows 11 later if I buy a PC now?

For any PC to be eligible for an upgrade it must meet the minimum system requirements and some features need specific hardware. Generally most currently sold Windows 10 PCs will be able to upgrade to Windows 11.

Need a new OS now?

Windows 10 remains an excellent choice and will be supported at least until 2025. If your device meets the requirements, you can always upgrade to Windows 11 later.
